What is 7v7 Flag Football?
7v7 is becoming an increasingly popular alternative to tackle football across the country. 7v7 is nearly identical to traditional football with two key differences:
First, as the name suggests, there are only 7 players on the field at a time for each team, while in regular tackle football there are 11.
The second main difference is that 7v7, in theory, is considered safer than tradition football. Unlike traditional tackle football, players are "downed" by pulling the opposition players "flags".
Watch the video below to see what 7v7 looks like in action.
Who is Monroe's 7v7 Football Coach?
Ben Imlay, Monroe's assistant principal, will coach Monroe's 6th Grade 7v7 Team. Families can contact coach Imlay at anytime via email at imlaybe@tulsaschools.org
How much does 7v7 Cost? A: It's FREE!
There is absolutely no cost to families to participate. Monroe will provide all players with jerseys, mouthguards, and afterschool/pre-practice meals.
However, we do encourage families to purchase football cleats if possible.
Who can participate? A: 6th Grade only
This team is only open to 6th Grade students. Unfortunately, because teams are allowed only 12 total players on their roster, not all students who try out will make the team. This is why it is important that your child attend tryouts on Wednesday, September 20th.
When and Where will 7v7 Football practices take place?
All practices will be held at Monroe after school from 4:30pm-5:30pm. Practice days may vary, but currently all practices are scheduled to take place on Monday's, Tuesday's, Thursday's and Friday's.
All students are provided transportation home after practice through our activity bus.
Almost all games will be held on Saturdays, with a few taking place on Thursdays.
What forms / paperwork is required?
All parents/guardians only need to complete TWO forms (one paper form, one digital form):
Form 1 (Digital): https://forms.gle/Vygc73U7cLNAV2no8
Form 2 (Paper): 7v7 Flag Football Permission Slip Form - Parents/Guardians must sign and return this form to Coach Imlay at Monroe by Wednesday, September 20th.
How many players are on a team? A: 12
A maximum of 12 players are eligible to participate on a team, which unfortunately means that not every 6th grader who trys out will make the team.
Additionally, only 7 players per team compete on the field at a given time. However, ALL players who make the team will play in every game as long as they are academically and behaviorally eligible at Monroe
Monroe is holding tryouts for our 6th Grade team on Wednesday, September 20th, afterschool from 4:30pm-5:30pm. Transportation is available for all students through the district's activity bus.
Are there Tryouts? A: YES! Sept. 20th
Monroe is holding tryouts for our 6th Grade team on Wednesday, September 20th, afterschool from 4:30pm-5:30pm. Transportation is available for all students through the district's activity bus.
What other schools will Monroe play against?
Monroe's 6th Grade squad will play against other TPS middle schools across the district. All teams will consist of only 6th graders.
Elementary teams are also apart of the league, but Monroe's 6th grade team is not included in the elementary league -- the 6th grade is a league of their own.
What organization runs this 7v7 Football League? A: Tulsa Dream Center
My child plays basketball - can they play both at the same time? A: YES!
Coach Watkins, Monroe's 6th grade basketball coach, and Coach Imlay have arranged it so there are absolutely NO conflicts between basketball practice and 7v7 football practice.
7v7 Football Team will NOT practice on days when our 6th grade basketball team practices -- and visa versa. Additionally, all 7v7 games will be held on Saturdays, which also will not conflict with any other Monroe fall sports.
